+ MoreFew places in Britain can boast the stunning combination of landscapes found in North Devon and Exmoor. With spectacular cliffs, secret coves, golden beaches, wild moorlands, sparkling river valleys, and lush rolling hills, this area is a truly special destination. North Devon...'s 171 sq km of outstanding natural beauty has earned it UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, thanks to its unique blend of landscapes, wildlife areas, rich cultural heritage, and committed communities. North Devon offers a harmonious balance between heritage and modern life, making it a friendly, laid-back, and beautiful part of the country. Here are some local favorites to explore: South Molton Just a 5-minute drive away, South Molton dates back to early Saxon times and features traditional architecture and a growing reputation for antique shops. It hosts a regular pannier market on Thursdays and Saturdays, selling fine arts, crafts, and local produce. The town also boasts the largest honey farm in the country, a modern indoor climbing wall, and an indoor swimming pool. Exmoor Known as Lorna Doone country after R.D. Blackmore’s famous novel, Exmoor is one of Britain’s smallest national parks. It features beautiful moorlands and charming villages like Dunster, home to the magnificent Dunster Castle, and Exford, ideal for exploring the ancient Tarr Steps and engaging in fishing, shooting, and riding. The moor is about a 10-minute drive away. Dartmoor Whitechapel's location makes it perfect for exploring all of Devon, including Dartmoor, which is within an hour’s drive. This proximity also makes South Devon easily accessible. Lundy Island Lundy Island, 3 miles long and half a mile wide, has a history dating back to the Neolithic period. Named ‘Puffin Island’ by the Norse, it still hosts many puffins today. Owned by the National Trust, Lundy welcomes visitors to enjoy its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. You can reach the island by sailing on the MS Oldenburg from Ilfracombe or Bideford, or by flying there by helicopter. Lynton and Lynmouth Dubbed the Little Switzerland of England, these twin villages developed around two deep wooded river valleys in Exmoor. The Victorians turned them into holiday centers, opening a cliff railway in 1890 to connect Lynmouth to Lynton, offering stunning views. The journey by car takes about 45 minutes. Explore North Devon and Exmoor for a unique and memorable experience, blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern comforts.
There are numerous options for pubs and places with great ales, food, and locations. Here are a few suggestions: South Molton South Molton offers a variety of takeaways, restaurants, cafés, and pubs. It's about a 7-minute drive from here. Pubs near South Molton: The Exeter Inn, Chittlehamholt – Approximately a 10-minute drive. The Red Lion and The Globe Inn, Chulmleigh – About a 25-minute drive. Stags Head Inn, Filleigh – Around a 10-minute drive. Exmoor Explore remote pubs in the picturesque Exmoor National Park: The Tarr Farm Inn – Overlooking the ancient Tarr Steps. The White Horse, Exford – Approximately a 45-minute drive.
The North Devon coastline offers a stunning blend of craggy cliffs, secluded coves, and beautiful sandy beaches, widely considered some of the finest in the UK and popular with holidaymakers year-round. Some beaches are ideal for swimming, while others are better for surfing. All are scenic and perfect for day trips from Whitechapel Cottages. Here are a few of our favorites: Woolacombe Beach Woolacombe is a vibrant village with a fantastic beach, great pubs, and restaurants. There's plenty to do for visitors of all ages, and the friendly, laid-back atmosphere keeps people coming back year after year. The beach, lying between Morte Point and Baggy Point, is a three-mile stretch of golden sand with Blue Flag and Premier Seaside Beach awards for its cleanliness, water quality, and facilities. Lifeguards ensure safe family swimming during the summer, and surfers flock here for the great waves and clean water. The beach has easy disabled access, a shop, parking, water sports, toilets, safe swimming areas, and refreshments. The rolling surf, bringing unbroken Atlantic breakers from thousands of miles away, contributes to the area's appeal. The surfing lifestyle has attracted thousands to this corner of North Devon over the years. The drive to Woolacombe takes approximately 45 minutes. Barricane Beach and Coombesgate Beach For a quieter alternative to Woolacombe during peak season, Barricane Beach and Coombesgate Beach (accessible from Barricane when the tide is out) are perfect. At low tide, these beaches have large pools, providing safe play areas for children. Barricane has a cafe offering freshly prepared snacks, tea, coffee, and delicious South Indian Thali. The drive to Barricane Beach is also approximately 45 minutes.
