The region
+ MoreThe nearest town is Wiveliscombe, which is a small town and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated 9 miles west of Taunton. Wiveliscombe is ideally located to explore the Brendon Hills, the Quantocks, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as Exmoor National Park. O...nce a thriving market town, today Wiveliscombe, known locally as Wivey, is a bustling town comprising pubs, restaurants and an interesting variety of independent shops.
The Bear in Wiveliscombe has great beer and good food, they do an amazing Sunday roast, Wednesday night is steak night and 2 for 1 pizzas on a Thursday. Opposite the Bear in Wiveliscombe is The White Hart which is more gastro. If you fancy a drive then the Bittescombe Inn in Upton, good burgers and more of a gastro pub. Go here after a walk at Haddon Hill or Wimbleball Lake. Slightly further afield is The Lost Kitchen near Knightshayes (NT property). Good beer and wood fired cooking. Booking is essential. If you fancy a picnic then Thornes butchers and Wivey Larder in Wiveliscombe do good pasty's, pies and flapjacks etc.
There are plenty of National Trust properties nearby, our favourite is Knightshayes and then go for lunch at The Lost Kitchen (booking essential) which does amazing wood fired pizzas. Dunster Castle and Killerton are all under 30 minutes away. The furnicular railway at Lynton/Lynmouth is good fun and takes you up the cliff. The West Somerset steam railway takes you from the Quantocks to Minehead, if you want to see it go by then Crowcombe station has a tea room. Wimbleball Lake has plenty of water sports on offer and there are fly fishing lakes at Exebridge. Wivey Pool is open April to September, outdoor lido and heated to 26 degrees in the Summer - its lovely!
The is an OS map in the hut for you to use throughout your stay and ask Alexis for any more details but here are our favourites! For fossil hunting Kilve is a must but watch the car park here - you MUST pay as you enter or you get a fine (Alexis has been caught out here) The beach at Blue Anchor is good at low tide for poking around in rock pools and has a fossilised forest at low tide, the Driftwood Cafe does good fish and chips and all day breakfasts. Walks wise, you have circular walks at Clatworthy Reservior (no dogs) and Wimbleball Lake. Haddon Hill is good for views over Wimbleball Lake and you often see Exmoor ponies up here. The woods at Horner are great for a more sheltered walk and if you want to go to the highest point on Exmoor then head for Dunkery Beacon. Park at Dunkery Gate and its a relatively straightforward gravel track up to the top.
