The region
+ MoreExford has two popular pubs that both serve lunch and evening meals, there is also the village tea shop, and the village shop that sells various essentials. Exford is situated in the centre of Exmoor National park offering great access to all that Exmoor has to offer. It is a... small rural village based around a traditional village green with childrens play area, beside it sits the village shop. Exford and the surrounding area is famous for its beautiful and unspoiled countryside making it ideal for hiking, biking, riding and fishing. There are many miles of way-marked paths down the valley following the river Exe, or over the moors of Exmoor to the coast a short drive away. The Exmoor coastal towns of Lynmouth, Porlock and Minehead are a short drive away whilst Taunton and the M5 are only 26 miles away. Just 10 minutes from Exford is Alderman's Barrow, just one example of the opportunity explore an incredible Bronze age Landscape, with its mysterious stone settings, barrow and hut circle. A footpath runs from Alderman's Barrow to Larkbarrow which is the ruins of an isolated farm that was used for firing practice during World War II. This area is described by Exmoor National Park as being surrounded by miles of open, rolling grass moorland, and one of the best places to experience remoteness and tranquility on Exmoor. Exmoor is a beautiful place to visit. It is a place of rolling hills, medieval villages, wild moors and a dramatic coastline. The moor does literally meet the sea with the highest sea cliffs in England. In 2011 Exmoor National Park was designated an International Dark Sky Reserve, the first place in Europe to achieve this prestigious award and only the second in the world.
Here at the Crown we offer home cooked food freshly prepared in our kitchen. The bar offers local real ales, ciders and a great wine list. We are open every evening for food and drink and lunch on a Sunday only. Serving home cooked food from 5:30pm - 8:45pm. Bar open Monday to Friday 4pm to 11pm, Saturday 3pm to 11pm and Sunday noon to 11pm. Breakfast is also available 8am - 9:30am (advanced booking required).
Here are some things you can do straight from Exford: Walking - The River Exe runs through Exford and there are plenty of walks direct from the village or just a short car ride away. Walking books are available to borrow Exmoor National Park - Exford is located at the heart of Exmoor National Park, so take the opportunity to explore the park's stunning landscapes, wildlife, flora and fauna. Porlock & Porlock Weir Weir - These are two picturesque villages and both well worth a visit. Lynton & Lynmouth - Both towns are worth a visit. Lynmouth is called 'little Switzerland' due to its unusual setting and there is a cliff railway which connects both towns. Dunkery Beacon - This is the highest point in Exmoor and offers great walking and stunning views across the countryside. Cream tea - Take a break from outdoor activities and enjoy a tradition cream tea at one of the local cafes or tea rooms. Country pub - Exmoor offers plenty of country pubs all serving a variety of local ales and ciders and lots of home cooked food. Fishing - The River Exe is a great spot for fishing, with plenty of brown trout and grayling to be caught. Wildlife spotting - Exmoor National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including red deer, Exmoor ponies, and rare bird species. The Exmoor pony center is free to visit and gets you close up to this ancient breed of pony.
There are multiple walks straight from the front door suitable for all abilities. Exmoor also has loads of walks only a short drive away. We have plenty of walking books available to borrow. The nearest seaside resort is Minehead which has a seafront and beach. There are more beaches a bit further afield at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands.
