The region
+ MoreThe Pony Stalls is approx 1 mile from the village of Brompton Regis; a small, rural village in a quiet location on the eastern side of Exmoor National Park. It was once a market ‘town’ and one of the largest in the area, divided into Highertown and Lowertown. The parish exten...ds from the Haddeo Valley up to the ridge of the Brendon Hills. It includes Wimbleball Lake, a reservoir which can store more than 21,000 megalitres of water and offers all kinds of water-based activities and the hamlets of Withiel Florey, Bury, Gupworthy and Hartford. The community run village shop is located in the village hall, stocking essentials. Dulverton is approx 5 miles from Brompton Regis and is known as the southern gateway to Exmoor. It's a pretty small town with a butcher, Post Office, fish & chip shop, greengrocer, late-opening supermarket, art gallery, hairdressers, guns and fishing tackle shop. There are also a number of quality boutiques, interesting gift shops plus a handful of lovely restaurants, tea rooms and pubs. Wheddon Cross is around 6 miles away, and has a mini-supermarket with long opening hours, a petrol station and a village pub too. Dunkery Beacon (1704 feet above sea level) is about three miles further on from the village, there are fantastic panoramic views from Dunkery; wild moorland to the west, the Bristol Channel and Wales to the north, the rolling Brendon Hills to the east and the Quarme Valley to the south. In recent years Wheddon Cross has become famous for the abundance of snowdrops in the nearby valley which has become known as 'Snowdrop Valley'. The snowdrops bloom around February and a park and ride system operates from the village to enable visitors easy access to the "carpet of snowdrops".
There is a wide variety of wonderful places to dine out, from country pubs to pretty tearooms. Here are a few favourites: Tea Rooms & Cafes: Coffee Couture at Wimbleball Lake Dulverton offers The Copper Kettle, The Tantivy and Mad Hatters Tea Room Tarr Farm Inn, The Exford Bridge Tea Room, Withypool Tearoom, Horner Tea Gardens nestled under Dunkery Beacon and Periwinkle Cottage at Selworthy are great after a scenic walk. Walks: Wimbleball Lake is perfect for a short 10 minute stroll from you door to the café. If you would like to venture a bit further a 30-minute walk (just over a mile) takes you to the dam. It's worth walking the entire perimeter of the lake. Spend about 3 hours on 'The Lakeside Round Walk' – 9 miles (14.5km). You'll enjoy long waterside sections, many peaceful woodland trails and views of the River Haddeo. This route is the round the lake walk but there are also a number of cycle trails with cycle hire available too. The three well surfaced trails are great for riders of all abilites. There are plenty of good horse riding from The Pony Stalls. Stabling and turnout can be arranged. From Dunkery Beacon, where you will see spectacular views for miles around there are many walks over open moorland down to sea level with some tea rooms and pubs on the way. From Dulverton to Tarr Steps with it's wooded paths along the river Barle, a bite to eat at Tarr Steps Inn, then up onto open fields. Walk the ancient Mineral railway line from Raleghs Cross. The Coldridge Way and South West Coast Path are also close. Simonsbath to Withypool, travelling past 'Cow Castle' and over 'Lanacre Bridge' and through our other farm 'Pickedstones' is one of my personal favourites, stopping at The Exmoor Forrest Hotel or Withypool for refreshments. There are so many amazing walks that I could ramble on for ages. Instead there will be maps and guide books at The Pony Stall so that you can plan you route. Beaches: The shores of Wimbleball are very beach-like in summer. But if you are looking for a dose of sea air Minehead and Blue Anchor are just half an hour away. For miles of golden sand make the 1 hour trip for Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde or Saunton Sands the perfect family day out or surfers paradise.
