The region
+ MoreWheddon Cross is just over a mile from Barn Owl Cottage, it's a village in the parish of Cutcombe on Exmoor, based around the crossroads; the roads run from north to south between Minehead and Dulverton, and east to west between Taunton and North Devon. The village is argued to b...e the highest on Exmoor, standing at 980 feet above sea level, and the highest point on Exmoor, Dunkery Beacon (1704 feet above sea level) is the focal point of the village. Dunkery Beacon is about three miles from the village, there are fantastic panoramic views from Dunkery; wild moorland to the west, the Bristol Channel and Wales to the north, the rolling Brendon Hills to the east and the Quarme Valley to the south. In recent years the village has become well-known for the abundance of snowdrops in the nearby valley which has become known as 'Snowdrop Valley'. The snowdrops bloom around February and a park and ride system operates from the village to enable visitors easy access to the "carpet of snowdrops". Wheddon Cross is surrounded by beautiful countryside; open moorland, wooded valleys and farmland. An abundance of wildlife can often be seen, including Exmoor ponies and red deer. There are a number of great walks along marked footpaths and bridleways, including the famous Coleridge Way which passes through.. Wheddon Cross is a thriving community and offers many local services for a small village. The village shop is a well-stocked mini-supermarket incorporating a Post Office counter, petrol pumps, cash point machine and has good opening hours. The Rest & Be Thankful Inn is the village pub which serves food and is child and dog friendly. The village also has a first school, church, playing field, public conveniences, and a bus service. Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 9 miles away. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrison's are both situated on the outskirts of the town), high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops throughout the town.
The village pub in Wheddon Cross is The Rest & Be Thankful Inn, and in nearby Timberscombe it's The Lion Inn, both are dog and family friendly and serve good pub food. If you're willing to drive further afield there is greats selection of pubs and restaurants in neighbouring villages and towns. Our recommendations can be found in the Guest Welcome pack located in each cottage.
There's a myriad of things to do on Exmoor; there's railways, zoos, golf, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, walking and riding, all easily accessible from the cottage. Exploring on horse back is probably one of the best ways to see and hear Exmoor at its best. Being that much closer to nature you are more likely to see red deer, Exmoor ponies, birds and butterflies living on the moor. If horse riding isn't your scene, there are local Land Rover Safaris from Porlock and Exford most days. The guide knows all the best places to show you Exmoor at its best. Fishing is also a great pastime on Exmoor. We have fishing in the local rivers and streams, fishing at nearby Wimbleball Lake and being so close to the coast, sea fishing trips are also very popular. Don't forget you need a fishing permit! West Somerset and Devon has some excellent golf courses right beside the sea. Minehead and Saunton Sands are probably the most well known locally. If you are looking for night-time activities, there is a wide assortment of restaurants, pubs and bars spread throughout Exmoor’s villages and in Minehead. Also as a designated Dark Skies Reserve, Exmoor by night will unveil a spectacular sea of stars.
From the village you can walk to Snowdrop Valley and then up onto the moors and to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. On a clear day, from here you can look across the Bristol Channel to Wales, up the coastline towards North Somerset, and in the other direction you can see right down into Dartmoor. Hopefully you will see some Exmoor red deer on your walk too. From Dunkery you can complete a circular walk back the village. Further information about suggested walks and footpaths is provided in the cottage. We are lucky to be not too far from the wonderful sandy surfing beaches of North Devon, allow an hour to drive for a beach day out. Woolacombe is a firm family favourite with its golden sand and dunes; it is a clean and safe beach with great surfing waves. Croyde and Putsborough are also favourite beaches with local families; again lovely sandy beaches, surfing and sailing. Plus Croyde has rock pools which are popular with younger children. Saunton Sands has 3 miles of sandy beach and dunes - again with excellent surfing and is ideal for all water sports.
