The region
+ MoreExford is a walkers paradise with many miles of waymarked paths down the valley following the river Exe, or over the moors of Exmoor to the coast a short drive away. The Exmoor coastal towns of Lynmouth, Porlock and Minehead are a short drive away whilst Taunton and the M5 are... only 26 miles away. Exmoor is a beautiful place to visit. It is the home of Lorna Doone and Tarka the otter. It is a place of rolling hills, medieval villages, wild moors and a dramatic coastline. The moor does literally meet the sea with the highest sea cliffs in England. In 2011 Exmoor National Park was designated an International Dark Sky Reserve, the first place in Europe to achieve this prestigious award and only the second in the world.
There are two pubs in the village that serve excellent food, The Crown situated directly opposite the cottage and White Horse two minuets walk. The village tea rooms are also a two-minute walk from the cottage. There are many country pubs in the surrounding villages.
Dunkery Beacon is the highest point in Exmoor at 519 metres. It is topped with a large cairn and is a wonderful viewpoint on a clear day. Horse riding, There are many bridleways and fantastic riding ground on Exmoor. Tarr Steps, A prehistoric clapper bridge across the River Barle. The Valley of Rocks, A dry valley that runs parallel to the coast about half a mile west of Lynton. It is noted for its herd of goats, its geology and its stunning views. Dunster, a medieval village with an ancient castle, priory, dovecote, yarn market, inns, packhorse bridge and a mill. Since the decline of the woollen industry in the eighteenth century the village has been locked in a time warp. Dunster Castle, once the home of the Luttrell family, is now owned by the National Trust. The Exmoor Safari leaves from Exford for a 3-hour trip across the moor. See red deer and Exmoor ponies, visit historic sights. Minehead, the area’s largest town. It offers a long flat sandy beach, great for picnics and games. The promenade with its cafés, bars and shops offers access to the sandy beach and spectacular views across to North Hill. Selworthy - Allerford - Bossington, three Picturesque Villages with lovely walks. Horner woods, One of the largest and most beautiful ancient oak woods in Britain, a national nature Reserve nestled on the Holnicote estate.
