The Piggery, Dulverton

Dulverton is just 1.4 miles from Stockham Farm and is full of great places to eat. Woods Bar and Restaurant (by Royal approval!) and The Bridge Inn are very popular and you often need to book. However you can often grab a table at The Lion Hotel or the excellent Tongdam Thai Restaurant (with a delicious take away menu that will be available at the cottage). If it's a great cup of coffee or a cream tea you are after, look no further than Tantivy, Mortimers or The Copper Kettle. 
And don't forget Dulverton's fab Fish and Chip shop too.

For eating and drinking out further afield all of the following come highly recommended... Tarr Farm Inn at Tarr Steps; The Royal Oak, Withypool; The Royal Oak, Winsford; The Swan, Bampton; The George, Brompton Regis; The London Inn, Molland; The Notley Arms, Monksilver; the Tea Rooms at Withypool and Winsford; the National Trust-owned Hunter’s Inn, Heddon Valley (with a fabulous half hour walk to the sea), and the Masons Arms at Knowstone (with a Michelin star no less!).

Whilst the cottages at Stockham Fam are very cosy and comfortable, there are a whole host of activities to get you out and about in the local area. Exmoor National Park is the ultimate location for those who love walking, visiting pubs, cycling, horse riding, hunting, shooting, fishing, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, wild swimming and even sunbathing on the glorious North Devon beaches that are not far away.

Exmoor National Park covers 265 square miles of Devon and Somerset – 600 miles of public footpaths and bridleways, stunning scenery, blue flag beaches, pretty villages, fascinating history and good food inns. It is also Europe’s first designated Dark Sky Reserve – the stargazing here is truly unforgettable! Exmoor is one of Britain’s best kept secrets, as it has fewer tourists than any of our other National Parks. 
Wildlife on the heather-clad moorland of Exmoor includes the only herd of wild Red Deer in the UK and the beautiful but endangered Exmoor ponies.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit nearby Wimbleball Lake (for walking, sailing and windsurfing); the remarkable National Trust properties of Knightshayes Court and Dunster Castle; the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (a splendid 6 mile walk from the cottage – yes, we’ve done it ourselves!); the West Somerset Steam Railway (with stops at Dunster and Minehead); the lovely coastal hamlet of Porlock Weir; the unique twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth and the stunning pebble beach at Heddon’s Mouth.

Dulverton has lots going on throughout the year, with a fortnightly cinema in the Town Hall on a Friday night; venues holding music and drama as part of the Two Moors Festival and many art and craft shows, summer fairs and sporting events; as well as a monthly farmers' market on the last Saturday of the month.

The walking and riding on Exmoor is a delight in all seasons, and from the cottages at Stockham Farm you can reach the heart of the moor on footpaths and bridlepaths, across fields, through woodland and moorland, without needing to cross any roads at all! 

We have a selection of books, leaflets and maps at the cottages for guests to borrow during their stay here. Or alternatively you can ask Ali and Jeff, the owners, where they would recommend for walking or riding. There is a marvellous 6 mile walk to the famous medieval clapper bridge at Tarr Steps, with a stop at the Tarr Farm Inn for lunch and a different 6 mile route back again!

For beach lovers, the beaches of Exmoor and North Devon are not far away. Lovely Lynmouth with its pretty harbour, shops, pubs and pebbly beach can be reached in 40 minutes.  At Heddon's Mouth there's a super level walk along paths from the Hunter's Inn pub/hotel (owned by the National Trust) to the amazing rocky/pebbly beach.  Further afield (and approximately an hour from Stockham) you will find some of North Devon's glorious sandy beaches - Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde, Saunton Sands, Instow... the list is endless. Something for every sunbather, surfer and beachcomber to enjoy.
