Yenworthy Barn in Oare sleeps up to 10 guests in four bedrooms. Set in a spectacular location on the northern slopes of Exmoor National Park, with views of the Channel, this is one of two traditional barns on the farm that has been sympathetically converted to offer a high quality accommodation.
Yenworthy Barn in Oare will certainly appeal to countryside admirers and walkers, there's fantastic walking direct from the door and around 13 miles of footpaths to explore! Yenworthy Barn is part of Yenworthy Farm, set in ‘Doone Country’, and actually appears in the Lorna Doone novel itself. The gun, which was supposedly used to repel the ‘Doones’, still hangs in the farmhouse to this day. This working farm once had its own mill and the old water wheel can still be seen at the far end of the Barn. The Barn has a patio for sitting/eating out and an enclosed gardens for children and/or dogs. In addition, there is access to all the farm fields and streams and children can go far and wide in complete safety. Although there are farm dogs, they are friendly and very disciplined and they seem to rub along happily with visitors, both canine and human! There is direct access to a myriad of paths for walkers, including the coast path and plenty of circular routes. There is a beach just below the farm which is fun to walk to but it is pebbly and rocky and not suitable for swimming. However, there are lovely beaches nearby - 15 minutes or so to Lee Abbey beach at Lynton and fabulous surfing beaches 45-60 minutes away at Croyde, Saunton and Woolacombe. Horse riding is available nearby..

The region
+ MoreExmoor is situated in South West Britain, specifically across West Somerset and North Devon. Often referred to as England's best kept secret, Exmoor is a wonderful holiday destination for anyone looking for a holiday in the great outdoors! There's so much to see and do, from sho...rt walks to long expeditions across the moors or horse riding, taking in a safari or sight-seeing at your own pace around the 'picture postcard' villages and hamlets. It is a place full of contrasts; dramatic coastlines of plunging cliffs, sheltered bays and historicports, wide open space and wilderness of the moors as well as the wooded valleys with quiet trails for you to enjoy. Exmoor is a holiday destination of unrivaled beauty and interest. Countisbury is an attractive rural parish in North Devon and within Exmoor National Park. The 'wilds' of the moorland literally tumble into the sea creating dramatic cliffs and a breathtaking coastline. Exmoor National Park is a popular holiday destination for walkers, cyclists and horse riders as well as those wishing to enjoy the many square miles of beautiful countryside and coastline and there a few better places to experience these activities than Countisbury. The picturesque villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are 10 minutes away to the west and is famous for the funicular cliff railway that runs between the two villages. Malmsmead and the 'Doone Valley' is also nearby, made famous by the novel called 'Lorna Doone' by R.D. Blackmore. The capital of North Devon is Barnstaple and provides an extensive range of facilities including the famous Victorian pannier market and Butchers Row. Porlock is 10 mins to the East and Minehead, with an extensive range of supermarkets, shops, bank and restaurants, is 20 mins to the East.
Lynmouth has a very good pub and restaurant, The Rising Sun, which overlooks the harbour. Booking is advisable. There are lots of other places to eat and have lunches, coffee and cream teas. Porlock also has a range of places to eat. Great cream trees can be had at Horner and the idyllic village of Selworthy, just east of Porlock. In Brendon, there is a lovely country pub with food, The Stag Hunters and The Blue Ball at Countisbury has very good pub grub and outside space.
This is a mecca for walkers and you will find a map at the Barn of the immediate area. Horse-riding is very popular especially as the local stables all have access to open Moorland. There is fishing on the East Lyn. Swimming beaches are to be found at Minehead and Dunster but they have a large tidal range and the sea can seem miles away when the tide is out! Lee Abbey beach near Lynton is great whatever the tide. It is a little cove and is never very busy. It has a great tea garden (closed on Sundays!). Further west are fabulous surfing beaches which do get busy in summer but Woolacombe in particular has plenty of car parking space whatever the level of busyness. Croyde, Saunton and Woolacombe are huge white sandy beaches, All have places to hire wetsuits and surfboards and have toilets and other facilities.
Exmoor is a walkers paradise, and the location of Yenworthy really lends itself to being a fabulous base for your walking holiday. There are numerous walks from the door, including the South West Coast Path, down to the coastline and up onto the moors - you will be spoilt for choice! The nearest sandy beach is Lee Abbey (5 miles) and there are excellent surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton within easy driving distance.
