The region
+ MoreThe hills of Exmoor surround Porlock on three sides, with the heather covered moors cut by deep, often wooded coombes with clear sparkling streams at their base. The spectacular beauty of Exmoor is protected by the Exmoor National Park Authority and the National Trust, with th...e flora and fauna on the moor helped by the award-winning purity of the air. In addition, Porlock Bay has received EU awards for the cleanliness of the sea-water. Its unique situation allows Porlock to enjoy a wonderful, warm and soft climate. Porlock is a traditional Exmoor Village with a long history of settlements existing on or near the site of the existing village, with stone-age remains only a short distance away. It is also a working village with shops supplying all that you need, to be found in the High Street. You will certainly be sure of a friendly Exmoor welcome in them all. This will be echoed in the pubs, hotels and restaurants to be found here. Porlock Weir, only 2 miles away, is a quaint little harbour with a unique charm that has to be experienced. It also boasts the remains of a prehistoric forest, small parts of which are occasionally visible still at a very low tide, and it was here that some remains of an Aurochs were found. These are now on display in the Visitor Centre in Porlock. The poets Wordsworth and Coleridge found Porlock very much to their liking and indeed Coleridge was interrupted by “a man from Porlock” whilst writing “Kubla Khan”; the consequence of which was that he lost his inspiration and never completed it. In 1798 their friend Robert Southey stayed at “The Ship Inn” at the bottom of Porlock Hill. To commemorate the association with Coleridge, Porlock is the western end of The Coleridge Way, the newly established walk from Nether Stowey in the Quantocks to Exmoor.
Porlock has two convenience stores, one butchers and several cafes/tea shops and pubs. The cottage has a folder together with brochures which give guests more information.
There are lots of places to visit and see in the vicinity; The village has the Doverhay Museum and a motor museum. There is a Bakalite museum in Williton as well as the beautiful nearby Dunster Castle. There are deer on the moor, which can usually be seen just before sunset. A small cinema in Lynton is also well worth a visit. The cottage has further brochures and leaflets covering many other places of interest in the area.
Good walking starts from the gate! Turn right, walk up the foot path to the left of Glen Lodge will take you directly up to Ley Hill. But be warned, the constant uphill slog will leave you gasping for breath. At the top there are several choices. Turning right will take you past various farms and further on to Poole Bridge. Turning right at any of these will take you back to the Hawkcombe valley. Turn right again and you will come back down the lane behind the cottage. Turn left at the gate and left again walk up the lane behind the cottage. This is an easier walk, after White Oaks turn hard left over the bridge. Stay on the higher path and have good views of the combe and it will bring you down past Glen Lodge gardens. Rather than turning left continue up the combe past the Hunting Lodge, through the woods where 'Maid Marion' was made, on past the lakes and barrow and up onto the top of the moor, beyond the top of Porlock Hill. (This is a long walk) Another nice walk is from Bossington car park (either drive there or walk). Cross the bridge at the rear of the car park, turn left and follow the stream. Keep on this track which will start to climb, keep going and you will come to the old coast guard building on Hurlstone Point. Looking back you will have a great views of Porlock Bay and may be lucky to see seals and porpoises in the sea below you. Retrace your steps to the foot on your right. Take this then down the steps to the pebble beach. Walk along the ridge and either cut across a field to get back to the first path or continue past the marsh to join one of the lanes back to Porlock. The choice is yours.
