The region
+ MoreDunster is a bustling village comprised of several restaurants, pubs and tea rooms, plus a varied range of independent shops. Many of the shops in Dunster are open during traditional hours of 9 am to 5 pm, although hours are often extended during the summer season. Conversely, s...ome shops may also reduce their opening days and/or hours out-of-season. There is a tourist information centre in Dunster, just beside Dunster Steep near the public car park at the far end of the village from Ruffles Cottage. Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 1.5 miles from Dunster. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrison's are both situated on the outskirts of the town and have long opening hours), most major high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops throughout the town.
Easy walking distance to Dunster High Street, where there are many excellent restaurants, pubs and tea shops. There is a deli in the village and 3 supermarkets within a couple of miles.
Dunster has much to offer – to name a few – the famous Yarn Market, Gallox (ancient packhorse) bridge, watermill, dovecote, buttercross, Bat’s Castle , with the magical Dunster Castle rising above the village. Lots of fun activities are organised in and around the Castle. Dunster beach is just a short walk away. Take a trip back in time on the West Somerset Steam Railway, which runs from Minehead, via Dunster and on to the Quantock Hills and back, stopping at pretty stations on the way. There are good facilities with picturesque craft and gift shops, cottages, a doll’s museum and excellent pubs, cafes and tearooms, including the well-known Luttrell Arms. There are plenty of activities all the year round for young and old. A medieval pageant (Dunster by Candlelight) takes place at the beginning of December where the village is lit by candlelight and there is dancing and music and entertainment in the streets. Dunster Show and Dunster County Fair are popular events in the Summer. Exmoor and West Somerset Slightly further afield – Minehead, Porlock, Cleeve Abbey, Watchet, Lynton and Lynmouth (with its Victorian water railway), Dulverton, the ancient Tarr Steps, Lorna Doone Country and of course beautiful Exmoor with its abundance of wildlife. The list is endless!
There are numerous walks immediately from the door – up on to the moor via Grabbist Hill (which is just a few paces away), Dunster deer park and woods, up to Conygar Tower and of course the beautiful Castle grounds. Dunster beach is is a short drive away or you can walk and Minehead just 1.5. miles away.
