The region
+ MoreThe harbour is the 'centre' of Porlock Weir, which is a 7 minute walk from Worthy Cottage - across the fields. The Bottom Ship pub is popular, while the Hotel [same ownership as the renowned Luttrell Arms in Dunster] has an outside dining terrace overlooking the Harbour. Ziang's ...noodle street bar is recommended and previous guests have spoken well of Italian resturant Locanda. There are a couple of Art galleries, a tea room and small shop. The village of Porlock is approximately 2 miles from Worthy Cottage and boasts three pubs, two grocery shops, a traditional local butcher, chemist, cash machine, hardware shop, visitor centre and a range of independent restaurants, shops and tea rooms. Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 7 miles from Worthy Cottage. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrison's are both situated on the outskirts of the town. Almost the whole area lies within the beautiful Exmoor National Park.
Porlock Weir - Bottom Ship -decent pub grub - in the bar ( good fire in the winter) or outside - Porlock Weir Hotel : decent food in the restaurant or outside overlooking the harbour. - Zhiangs streetfood noodle bar : generally very good asian dishes for takeaway or weather permitting to be enjoyed outside by the harbour. - Locanda Italian restaurant : good reports from guests Porlock - Top Ship - watering hole of Coleridge, Southey, Wordsworth etc . Keep a decent pint of Exmoor ale. - Various tea rooms Dunster - Luttrell Arms Hotel : good atmosphere, nice garden - Chapel House - lots of 5 star reviews - Hathaways - only 10 covers so booking advised - good reveiws - Reeves : good reviews but can be pricey Lynmouth - Esplanade Fish & Chips - we love their cod & Chips Dulverton - Woods : bar/restaurant with good atmosphere. Wine pub of the year for 10 straight years Selworthy / Horner /Bossington - all have good tea gardens.
Activities Walking : 600 miles of footpaths available direct form the cottage. Horner, Selworthy, Bossington, Webbers Post good starting points. Fishing : Salmon & trout on the rivers Lyn, Exe and Barle. Ghillie available at a price ! Trout at Clatworthy Reservoir- take a boat and explore the hidden beauty and wildlife -otters, deer, herons - and trout lakes at Dulverton and Exbridge. Sea fishing trips at the Weir and Minehead. Riding : Exmoor is wonderful riding country. Horses/guided rides at Horner, Bossington, Brendon. Kayaking, paddle-boarding, mountain biking [ brilliant routes all over Exmoor] etc available at Exmoor Adventure Centre at the Weir. Golf : Minehead hosts one of the oldest courses in the UK. A links course, the homeward nine into a stiff SW wind with out of bounds on the beach to the right is an interesting and usually humbling experience. Sightseeing Dunster with its castle a must. Bossington and Selworthy both 'picture postcard beautiful. Lynmouth/Lynton [linked by a cliff railway] well worth a visit. Dont miss the Valley of the Rocks. Dulverton a pretty village with good eatery in Woods. Doone Valley home to Lorna Doone of literary fame. West Somerset Railway in Minehead offers steam train rides. Watchet and ancient harbour with harbour art galleries housed in shipping containers. Tropicquaria Zoo punches well above its weight. Dunkery Beacon (1706 feet) offers 75 mile views, north to the Welsh mountains, south to Dartmoor. Tarr Steps a favourite, Circular 2 mile walk up the river excellent, watch out for kingfishers, otters, deer. Cloutsham [ fork right at Webbers Post ]. After the farm look left and it's one of the best deer viewing places on the Moor. Stoke Pero - after Cloutsham take first right. Highest church [ (1100 feet] Small but perfect. Exeter is about 90 mins down the Exe valley by way of Wheddon Cross. Bristol is about 100 mins via the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge [exit M5 at J19]
The cottage lies directly on the Coast Path. Lynmouth is a 10 mile walk. There are numerous other walks form the door. Other good starting places include Bossington, Selworthy, Webbers Post, Malmesmead, Tarr Steps., County Gate. Boots desirable in winter, trainers in summer ok. The beach is a 5 minute walk. The nearest sandy beaches are Minehead and Dunster. Lee bay beyond Lynmouth is shingle and grey sand and is a nice one. The big sandy beaches at Woolacombe, Saunton and Braunton are all about an hour away. At the eastern end of Woolacombe beach are two of the most beautiful beaches [Voted in Top 25 ] in the UK, Barricane and Eastcombe. Please note these are low tide beaches only so do check the tide times. Though they can be accessed by different steps down the low cliffs, they are in effect the same beach. Golden sands, stunning rock formations, streams, they live up to their reputation. East of Minehead, Watchet and Kilve beaches are famous for their fossil formations, while Kilve beach was the setting for the Bryan Adams, 'Everything I do...' rock video.
