Step aboard for an unforgettable three-day steam celebration at the Spring Steam Spectacular 2025, running from Friday 2nd May to Bank Holiday Monday 5th May. This is the headline steam event of the year on the West Somerset Railway, offering a spectacular showcase of historic locomotives running through the stunning landscapes of Exmoor, the Quantock Hills, and the Bristol Channel coastline.
This year’s event is particularly special as part of Railway 200, a nationwide celebration marking 200 years of the modern railway. Expect a fantastic selection of heritage locomotives from different eras and railway companies, with visiting engines joining the WSR’s home fleet to bring history to life.
A Full Three-Day Steam Adventure
The Spring Steam Spectacular is more than just a train ride—it’s a three-day steam extravaganza! With an intensive timetable running from morning until night, you’ll have the chance to:
- Hop on and off at stations along the line, exploring heritage sites, museums, and model railways.
- Experience special train services, including local passenger routes, demonstration goods trains, and thrilling non-stop express journeys.
- Travel down the rarely opened line between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren, including the impressive turning triangle and turntable at Minehead.
- Capture incredible steam railway moments—perfect for photography enthusiasts!
- Enjoy a great day out with the family—and on Bank Holiday Monday, kids travel for just £1!
Star Attractions – Guest Locomotives
Two very special locomotives have already been confirmed for the event:
🚂 LMS ‘Jubilee’ Class 45596 ‘Bahamas’ – A mainline star that rarely appears at heritage railway events. Built in 1935, this beautifully preserved locomotive is a must-see in action on the WSR.
🚂 LBSCR A1X Class ‘Terrier’ No.72 ‘Fenchurch’ – A true veteran of British rail, built in 1872! This engine is making its first-ever visit to the WSR, bringing a slice of railway history with it.
More visiting locomotives will be announced soon, joining the West Somerset Railway’s home fleet for an unforgettable display of steam power.
