Tucked away in the southeast corner of Exmoor is a beautiful little town brimming with life, warmth and an abundance of unique offerings; its name is Dulverton. We assume you’re coming to visit, and if you’re not, you definitely should be. What to see & do in Dulverton
Take a look around!
Steeped in history, with the majestic, medieval All Saints Church, the stunning five span arch bridge across the River Barle and an array of traditional stone buildings, Dulverton is an incredibly picturesque place for a stroll. Not to mention the magnitude of scenic surroundings there are in the vicinity to explore… (If you want walk recommendations – click here.) So, our first suggestion to you is rather obvious: get out there and see it 🙂
Take Lorna Doone Flowers
Lorna Doone was the title character of famous 17th Century novel Lorna Doone: A Romance on Exmoor by Richard Doddridge Blackmore. The novel, you may have guessed, is set on Exmoor, particularly around the East Lyn valley, which has come to be known as the “Lorna Doone Valley”, “Doone Valley” or “Doone Country” due to the esteem and narrative the tale brought to the area. Dulverton is home to the iconic Lorna Doone Statue and, over the years, it has become tradition for locals or visitors to take flowers to place in her beautiful bronze hand. So, if you’re feeling romantic or a little whimsical, why not pick a posy in the wild or frequent a florist en route to see this famous heroine?!
Cross The Tarr Steps
Spanning the River Barle is a spectacular ancient clapper bridge known as The Tarr Steps. It’s a uniquely magical part of the countryside and you feel as though you might see fairies dancing across the water at any given moment. There was some damage to The Tarr Steps during the intense storms we saw in January, but Somerset Council have just repaired it, in time for summer. During which time people often don their cozzies for some wild swimming in the river here! Outdoor Activities at Wimbleball Lake
Wimbleball Lake is a water supply reservoir constructed in the 1970s, just a few miles from Dulverton, and it is an utterly breathtaking location. It’s worth going along just to see it on a clear day, or to watch the sunset one evening, but the SW Lakes Trust also run water sports & activities there… So, if you’re a keen kayaker, or you’d like to learn to sail, or reckon you have the balance for stand-up paddle-boarding, there is much fun to be had. You can rent equipment or book classes or sessions, and they also offer land based activities such as archery & cycling, and even SKY based activities with their high ropes & zip wires!
Take A Tour of the Exmoor Distillery
Dulverton also has the honour of being the home to the reputable Exmoor Distillery. Just on the edge of town, you will find the makers of Northmoor Gin, Blackmoor Rum & Barle Valley Vodka. The Exmoor Distillery are absolute botanical babes and we highly recommend you pop along to visit, not just because they sell the brilliant booze they make, but because they can show you how it’s done! Tours & tastings are run 7 days a week and can be arranged for just £12.50pp.
Shop local at the Dulverton Farmers Market
On the last Saturday of the summer months, (April through September) the Dulverton Farmers Market offers a smorgasbord of delights. This is the place to peruse a variety of delectable, locally produced goods. You’ll have so much to choose from… Microbrews from The Cottage Beer Project, specialty gin, rum & vodka from aforementioned Exmoor Distillery, freshly baked loaves from Lucho Bakes, chutneys and jams from The Selworthy Pantry, firey hot things from The Culmstock Chilli Co and some really special gifts, art and craft pieces too. There’s bound to be something you simply have to take home with you, so we highly recommend you stop by if this is on whilst you’re in town.
Dulverton by Starlight
We would be amiss to finish up this “things to see & do in Dulverton” section without mentioning the Christmas fair this vibrant village puts on every year: Dulverton by Starlight! Dulverton by Starlight is a captivating Christmas market event held in the darkness, reminiscent of the original of this kind Dunster by Candlelight. This special fair is lit entirely with twinkling fairy lights beneath Exmoor’s renowned starry sky. The festivities feature charming stalls offering exquisite goods, street performers, live music and fireworks! This year, it’ll be held on Sunday 3rd December – so save the date!

Woods Pub & Restaurant

Woods is a critically acclaimed pub & restaurant that prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients for exceptionally good food. The place itself is stunning; tasteful rustic interiors that radiate charm and elegance, and there’s a sweet little courtyard garden for drinks outdoors too. This is the hot spot in Dulverton – the Prince & Princess of Wales know; they’ve dined there multiple times!
The Bridge Inn

The Bridge Inn is a beloved Dulverton watering hole, overlooking the iconic Barle Bridge. The staff here will welcome you, your family and any canine companions, whether you’re looking to get out of the cold for some hearty pies & pints, or hoping for a table in the sunshine for a lovely light meal and some rosé by the river.
The Tarr Farm Inn

Just a short distance uphill from the famous Tarr Steps we mentioned, sits The Tarr Farm Inn. This charming pub has a rich history dating back to the 17th Century. It boasts delightful gardens with glorious views of the idyllic countryside it’s nestled in, and an elegant bar with comfortable booths to cozy up in. The Tarr Farm Inn’s unique setting alone makes it a must-visit spot, but to tempt you further, it also serves award-winning food!
Tongdam Thai Restaurant

If you’re looking for something spicier than quintessential British pub food, we recommend Tongdam Thai, in the heart of Dulverton. It’s in a classic Exmoor white washed cottage building, but has touches of the oriental decor inside. There’s also some lovely outdoor seating underneath a pergola lush with green vines & wise old wisteria. Or, you can always order takeaway… Perfect for winter evenings when you want to stay cosy by the fire in your dreamy little holiday cottage or perhaps set up a spread one summer’s eve in the garden!

Mortimer’s
Dulverton TA22 9HB
This is a proper old school caff. And that’s not a typo, I mean C-A-F-F: caff. There’s no fancy e with an accent on the end here, just an extra F. It’s cheap and cheerful, (not the most beautiful looking place you’ve ever seen), but it does a MEAN cheese & bacon sarnie and a generous greasy spoon style fry up. Besides, everyone knows that caffs are back in fashion – just ask the 61.5K people following the Instagram account “@caffs_not_cafes“.
Coffee Couture @ Wimbleball

As we mentioned earlier, not far from Dulverton is the stunning Wimbleball Lake. So since we’ve recommended you check it out anyway, we thought you might want to know a great spot for coffee with a cracking view of the place. Meet Coffee Couture, a countryside cafe serving smoothies, juices and all the libation you could need.
The Copper Kettle

Last but not least is The Copper Kettle. A classic cute Exmoor café. This is the place in Dulverton for cream teas and freshly baked goods. Warm, personal and patriotic, this is quintessential Britain at its yummiest. Enjoy a slice of quiche, a slap up brekkie, or a scrumptious scone here in this village favourite.
