Exmoor is a glorious part of the world to visit in the springtime; lambs a leaping, flowers in bloom, and greenery vibrantly glowing in abundance. With so much to see and do across Exmoor, it can be hard to know where to start! I don’t know about you, but I love a little 3 day itinerary for some holiday inspiration. Of course, there will be plenty of other options, extras or alternatives… but here’s a mini-break game plan to whet your appetite for an Exmoor adventure…
Exmoor Itinerary Day 1: Blow away the cobwebs
Morning
Begin your day with a visit to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. This may sound like an ambitious start.. but don’t worry! There are options for parking not too very far from the summit. This is a great place to start a walk, enjoy some birdwatching or simply take in the stunning views. In the spring, the heather begins to bloom, covering the hills in a sea of purple.
Afternoon
Head to the traditional Somerset village of Porlock, on the coast. Here, you can take a stroll along the shingle beach, and enjoy lunch in one of the charming independent cafes or pubs. There’s a great playpark here if you have kids; follow the road up behind the Church. Alternatively, boff up your knowledge on the history and stories of Porlock and the surrounding villages, in the Dovery Manor Museum. (Free entry!)
Evening
For dinner, head to The Ship Inn (Porlock) for a friendly country pub experience. This traditional pub serves locally sourced, seasonal food and has a great selection of real ales and ciders. Relax and unwind in the cosy bar or enjoy dinner in the restaurant.
Exmoor Itinerary Day 2: Wonderous woodlands
Morning
Start your day with a visit to Watersmeet, a beautiful valley where the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water meet, surrounded by woodlands and wildflowers. The valley is particularly stunning in the spring, with bluebells and wild garlic carpeting the ground. Take a walk along the riverbank, have a picnic in the sunshine, and watch the wildlife play.
Afternoon
Head to Tarr Steps, an ancient clapper bridge over the River Barle, with a surrounding nature reserve. In the spring, the woods are full of bluebells, wild garlic, and other wildflowers, making this a beautiful spot for a woodland walk. Take a leisurely walk along the river and cross the bridge, which is thought to date back to the Bronze Age.
Evening
For dinner, head to the lovely Reeves in Dunster. Chef-owned and multi-award winning, you can see the passion that Justin and Claire Reeves put into hosting guests for fine dining on Exmoor. I love the ambience and vibe here… with incredible locally sourced seasonal food.
Exmoor Itinerary Day 3: Enjoy the epic Exmoor coast
Morning
Get the day going with a visit to the Valley of the Rocks, a unique geological formation located on the coast, just a few miles from Lynton and Lynmouth. This is one of the most famous sites in Exmoor, with stunning views of the coast and its wildlife. In the spring, visitors can see primroses, bluebells, and other wildflowers blooming on the cliffs and hillsides.
Afternoon
Head on a short way to the stunning, secluded Lee Abbey Beach. Privately owned but open to the public, this sand and rocky beach sits nestled between towing cliffs. There are plenty of rock pools to explore and sandy spots at low tide. Plunge in for a swim if the sun is shining… Hats off to you for a cold blustery dunk, also an invigorating experience!
Evening
For your final evening on Exmoor, head to Lynmouth, a picturesque village located at the foot of the cliffs, with a beautiful harbour and sandy beach. In the spring, the village is covered in a blanket of flowers, including daffodils, tulips, and primroses. Enjoy a meal in one of the village’s seafood restaurants, or relax with a drink and reminisce on your fabulous three days, before heading back to your new favourite home-from-home holiday cottage…
