5 Day Summer Break on Exmoor | Itinerary Inspiration

5 Day Summer Break on Exmoor | Itinerary Inspiration

Fresh air, the great outdoors, and (hopefully!) some fabulous English summer days… There’s nothing quite like it for re-charging on an Exmoor holiday. There are so many beautiful spots to visit and invigorating things to do here, but where to start?? Whether you like to plan ahead or take each day as it comes, it’s handy to have a bit of staycation inspiration, if you ask me… So here are a few ideas for what to do on your next Exmoor summer escape!

Exmoor Summer Itinerary Day 1: Coastal Gems

Morning

Head to the coastal hamlet of Porlock Weir for a leisurely holiday start. You can amble around the harbour or onto the shingle beach (with or without ice cream in hand and before or after morning coffee!). If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even book a boat trip into the bay on ‘Morgan M’.

Afternoon

Head out towards the stunningly scenic Valley of the Rocks. Even the journey there is well worth it – drive up the infamous Porlock Hill out west. The view from the coastal road is incredible – you may see a few Exmoor ponies decorating the landscape too. After a walk or a rocky scramble up to the very highest viewpoints, head back to the villages of Lynmouth and Lynton.

Evening

Indulge in some fresh local seafood for dinner – look out for Porlock Weir Oysters on the menu, literally harvested from the crystal clear waters behind you.  There are plenty of options for restaurants in Lynton or Lynmouth or perhaps stop by The Blue Ball or Culbone Inn on route back east.

Exmoor Summer Itinerary Day 2: Outdoor Adventures

Morning

Get active outdoors on any of an array of options. Adventure companies host many activities, including coasteering, rock climbing or stand-up paddleboarding. Or perhaps head out on horseback or rent a bike to cover some ground across the moors.

Afternoon

Head to Wimbleball Lake for the afternoon. This attractive reservoir is open to the public with loads to do, on or off the water. Give kayaking a go, some archery or a high ropes course… But no pressure; for chilled vibes, you could opt for a lakeside walk with a snack at the cafe.

Evening

Why not find a picturesque picnic spot in the Exmoor landscape to continue the outdoor theme? Or perhaps head back to your holiday cottage for some alfresco dining or a barbeque in the garden

Exmoor Summer Itinerary Day 3: Cultural Exploration

Morning

Start with a trip to Dunster Castle and its grounds. This medieval fortress is run by the National Trust, with beautiful gardens and stunning views over the surrounding countryside. There’s a working watermill you can also explore with entry to the castle. Afterwards, pick from one of many fabulous tea rooms and restaurants in Dunster for a bite to eat for lunch.

Afternoon

Stick around in Dunster to explore the cobbled streets, unique shops, and ancient sites. Alternatively, discover the ancient ruins of Cleeve Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery, and learn about its intriguing history.

Evening

Head to Luxborough for a historic evening meal. The Royal Oak Inn here has been a village centrepiece for 600+ years, preserving original features like flagstone flooring, stone walls, and exposed beams.

Exmoor Summer Itinerary Day 4: Wildlife Encounters

Morning

Exmoor is well known for it’s incredible array of wildlife. You may well see some on your own whilst exploring… But for an unforgettable and informative experience, head out on a guided wildlife safari; experts can help you spot Exmoor’s unique and diverse inhabitants, including red deer, ponies, and various bird species.

Afternoon

You have undoubtedly heard about the iconic, incredible Exmoor Ponies that have roamed the moors for thousands of years. The Moorland Mousie Trust exists to help promote and protect them – come to their Exmoor Pony Centre to interact with these iconic and gentle creatures.

Evening

From the Pony Centre, you’re not far off the delightful market town of Dulverton. Wander the streets of this southern Exmoor market town, visit the Exmoor Distillery and find a spot to dine.

Exmoor Summer Itinerary Day 5: Farewell and Reflection

Morning

Have a lovely lazy morning on your last full day – you’re on holiday, and you deserve it! Love an early start? Enjoy a peaceful cuppa looking out over an idyllic Exmoor view from your bedroom window. Or perhaps, like me, you’re a snoozer… Take the opportunity to relax into the lack of usual commute or household chores and things to do that you’d have at home.

Afternoon

Get out and about for the afternoon, tracking down a hidden gem or exploring an intriguing valley or village. Whether you fancy getting goosebumps or reading a book on the banks, you could try one of these wild swimming spots.

Evening

Take your last night to appreciate Exmoors’ incredible starry skies. Slip out after nightfall and soak in the quiet, with only the sounds of the natural world around you. Exmoor was designated Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve; green by day and black by night, this fabulous place boasts incredibly low light pollution (or other human tarnishing in general!).
